Noah grabbed a book to read on the couch. This was not turning out to be a quiet weekend, and he still had most of his homework to do.

A mystery novel that focuses on two relatable brothers who bond with a new neighbourhood friend over a shared curiosity for a seemingly haunted house on their street.

This is particularly a great book for kids who are starting to branch into reading chapter books (while still including some illustrations too). While the focus is on solving a neighbourhood mystery, the author reinforces a few good themes, such as the importance and strength held in creating friendships and what you can accomplish through teamwork. Additionally, we also see an emphasis on knowing when to ask for help from others—a skill that can be challenging for kids to fully grasp.

I wish there was a little more imagination and ingenuity, rather than a reliance on smart technology (I know this is the way the world is going, but I don’t love implying that kids rely on it to solve situations).

Technology aside, this is a good book for kids to read. Additionally, this is the first book in the Sycamore Street Mysteries Series, making it a great way to introduce kids to reading book series rather than just standalone books.
